Delete useless Language files from FIFA09 Install Directory

Now if you have installed FIFA09, you must have noticed that it gulps quite a lot of space (~ around 5GB). And while you play the game, you are always asked the language. Now, most of the people do not use more than one language. Most are confined to ‘English’. So why even install the other language files?. The question becomes more prominent when you get to know that each language is eating around 360MB of your harddisk space. So if you just use English language, then your 360×4 MB is just getting wasted. It is quite a lot of memory for guys having low capacity harddisks or if you are running out of space. And because there is no option (while installing) to restrict installation of other language files, you just end up wasting your 1.4GB.

So an alternative is taking care of things manually after the game has installed. To get back our precious 1.4GB, we will be removing the other language commentry files manually from the installed directory. Naturally this will have some side-effects like, the game will crash if you select the language at game screen that you have already deleted manually. Now its obvious that you won’t have any problems if you play the language for which the commentry file still exists.

Step1:

Goto installation directory… (Generally: “C:\Program Files\EA Sports\FIFA09”)

Now go to directory,  “…FIFA09/Data/Audio”

Step2: Locate the files

  • dat_dut.big                        Size: ~ 360MB         Dutch / Netherlands
  • dat_ger.big                        Size: ~ 360MB         German
  • dat_ita.big                         Size: ~ 360MB         Italian
  • dat_fre.big                         Size: ~ 360MB         French
  • dat_eng.big                       Size: ~ 360MB         English

All these files contain data for commentary for the corresponding languages.
(It is possible that you might not have some of these files or might have some others. Just follow the same procedure for them. It is also possible that the size might differ. No worries, It still works.)

Step3: Delete the correponding file and Create dummy files

Now assuming that i do not want dutch commentary and thus want to delete the corresponding file.

Delete the corresponding commentary file. (In this example, delete “dat_dut.big”)

Using notepad or any other simple application make a blank object/document and save it as “dat_dut.txt”. Then rename it to “dat_dut.big”

Now this file “dat_dut.big” will consume negligible space n voila! you just earned back your 358MB.

(Dummy file is necessary to make sure that the FIFA09 game starts up)

You can delete whatever language commentary file you do not want.

Make sure you run only that language from game for which the original file still exists.
